There’s nothing quite like a fresh tortilla, not only do they taste great but they’re fun for the whole family to make!
Serving: 8 tortillas Preparation time: ~20 mins | Cook time: ~60 mins
Tools: Tortilla press or two cutting boards, parchment paper cut into 2- 8 inch squares (optional), large sauté pan
Ingredients
● 1 cup (250 ml) Masa Harina (see tips)
● 1 tsp (5 ml) sea salt
● ¾ cup (175 ml) warm water
● 3 tbsp avocado or olive oil, divided
Directions
1. In a mixing bowl combine Masa Harina, salt and water and mix well to combine. Set aside to rest for 15 minutes.
2. Divide dough into 8 equal portions and roll into balls. Set aside.
3. In a large sauté pan warm 1 tbsp (15 mL) olive oil over medium heat.
4. Coat one side of each parchment paper with oil. Sandwich one ball of dough between the oiled parchment paper pieces. Press the dough in a tortilla press or between two cutting boards to desired thickness (see tips). Remove the top layer of paper, pick up parchment paper and place tortilla-side down in your hand. Remove parchment paper and transfer to a preheated sauté pan.
5. Cook the tortilla until the bottom is crisp and golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Flip the tortilla, cover the pan and cook until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Repeat this process until all tortillas are cooked adding more oil to the parchment paper and pan as needed.
6. Remove from heat and serve immediately.
Tips
● Masa Harina can be found with other cornmeal and Mexican products in your local grocery store.
● Get your kids involved and make the tortillas by hand. Thick or thin it doesn’t matter; simply adjust the cooking time accordingly.
● Keep your tortillas soft, dampen a kitchen towel and fold your warm tortillas in the towel to keep them warm and soft.
